Living with an autoimmune condition is like wild. Your day can be filled with twists, turns, and many unexpected challenges. For black women facing conditions like Dermatomyositis, Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis, (to name a few) the road to wellness can be particularly daunting. From navigating systemic disparities in healthcare to confronting cultural stigmas, the journey is rife with obstacles. Yet, amidst the struggles, there lies magic through a holistic approach to wellness that empowers individuals to advocate for their health and commit to this path towards healing.

The Challenges We Face
As black women with autoimmune conditions, we often find ourselves facing a myriad of challenges unique to our experiences. The obstacles can feel insurmountable when seeking help in the healthcare system and navigating factors around work, childcare, and support. Systemic racism and bias within the healthcare system may lead to diagnostic delays, misdiagnosis, or inadequate treatment, further exacerbating our health struggles. Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health and holistic wellness within our communities can hinder our ability to explore alternative healing modalities.
My Journey to Wellness
In the face of these challenges, I refuse to be defined by a diagnosis. Instead, I have embraced a holistic approach to wellness that empowers me to take control of my health and advocate for myself. Partnering with a care team that shares my vision, I chose to reverse and heal Dermatomyositis and Interstitial Lung Disease. While some may believe this is impossible or even controversial, I believe faith and a positive mindset is essential for healing.
Alongside conventional medical treatments, I have delved into the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and mind-body wellness, seeking to restore balance and harmony to my body, mind, and spirit.
Understanding Homeostasis:
At the heart of my wellness journey lies the concept of homeostasis - the body's innate ability to maintain stability and equilibrium despite external challenges. When the body becomes imbalanced, whether due to autoimmune dysfunction, environmental factors, or emotional stressors, it takes time and conscious effort to bring it back into harmony. Through mindful practices, nourishing nutrition, and compassionate self-care, I have gradually reclaimed my health and vitality.
